Welcome to antiX.
About antiX
antiX is a fast, lightweight and easy to install linux live CD distribution based on MEPIS for Intel-AMD x86 compatible systems. antiX offers users the "Magic of Mepis" in an environment suitable for old computers. So don't throw away that old computer yet! The goal of antiX is to provide a light, but fully functional and flexible free operating system for both newcomers and experienced users of Linux. It should run on most computers, ranging from 64MB old PII 266 systems with pre-configured 128MB RAM to the latest powerful boxes. 128MB RAM is recommended for antiX. antiX can also be used as a fast-booting rescue cd.
antiX-M7 will not run (yet) on older processors such as Pentium I (it seems that PII is ok, but PII MMX may not boot), AMD K5, and AMD K6 as it uses an up to date i686 kernel. antiX-Spartacus should.
At the moment antiX comes as a full distro (less than 400MB) and as a base distro (c200MB). For those who wish to have control over the install, use antiX-base.
Present released version: antiX-M7.5 Toussaint Louverture
News
21 August 2008
With great pleasure, antiX-M7.5 - Toussaint Louverture now available (392MB). mepisimo tuxfamily.org
Hopefully, it will be available from MEPIS mirrors soon. antiX-M7.5-base (c210 MB) is also available for those users who want to build from a basic install. For those that have antiX-M7.5-test1 or test2 iso's you can patch them via the xdelta patches also made available. (see MEPIS wiki for help)
Release notes for Toussaint Louverture. (antiX-M7.5)
This release concentrates on 3 main areas.
1. Customised icewm. 2. antiX Control Centre. 3. smxi script integration.
All three options were from community input to make antiX as user-friendly and flexible as possible.
1. Fully customised icewm. antiX-M7.5 is probably the best configured OOTB icewm distro, thanks to the great work by OU812. Icewm in antiX-M7.5 works as a fully functioning and stylish desktop, with tools to customise as the user wishes.
2. antiX Control Centre. Inspired by the Control Centre in TinyMe, OU812 developed one for antiX. Users can now carry out desktop, admin, networking and hardware related tasks from one central control centre.
3. smxi script integration. Thanks to h2, the smxi script can be used in antiX. This script enables users to keep their antiX rolling along and fully maintained. This has allowed antiX to be incredibly flexible (even more so the antiX-base version) If users wish they can 'sidux' or 'sid' their system, install newer kernels from Debian and sidux, install graphics drivers (ATI and nVidia), install other desktop environments such as xfce, kde, and install virtualbox and lots more!

For users that have antiX-M7(0.1), antiX-M7.2 already installed, you can upgrade to antiX-M7.5 by using the antiX-upgraders script:
http://www.mepisimo.com/antix/antiX-upgrader
Download to your home/user folder, make executable and run as root in a terminal ./antiX-upgrader.sh
Please read the script carefully. It is pretty basic, but it gets the job done. Fully upgrading from antiX-M7 or antiX-M7.2 will install approx. 330MB of upgrades.
Have fun!

antiX Mepis kernel has fixed the security breach vmsplice() issue. A simple upgrade should install the patched kernel and necessary linux-header files.

Lysistrata has been upgraded!
Now available antiX-M7.01. This is an upgraded version of antiX-M7 incorporating the kernel version in the released Mepis 7, the Debian Stable upgrades and upgrades from the Debian testing repository. In this version, the Mepis repo is not used by default, so upgrading should pose few, if any, problems.
Now available from the mirrors below (309MB). It is larger as it also includes kernel headers.

antiX-xfce-alpha1.iso available for testing
I have made available an antiX-xfce-alpha1.iso of 187MB for those that want a basic xfce desktop environment and the freedom to add apps of your choice. antiX-xfce has all the Mepis tools to help get you going and install to hd, but little else! It is not a full xfce install, just the minimum. Please note this is an untested alpha release, and suitable for those who wish to 'play' and give feedback. It is also 'unsupported', in the sense that I know very little about xfce. I'm sure other antiX users and MepisLovers will chip in though to help.
At login, default is fluxbox, which includes the Mepis tools in the menu. To login to xfce, simply toggle the F1 key to xfce, before pressing Enter. The xfce menu doesn't show the Mepis tools (I think), so any configuration ie network will have to be done via a terminal as root. mnetwork muser msystem mconfig minstall
Feedback would be much appreciated and also helpers/developers willing to take on the project are encouraged.

antiX-base.iso available for testing
I have made available an antiX-base.iso of 176MB for those that want a basic Lysistrata install and the freedom to add apps of your choice. antiX-base has all the Mepis tools to help get you going and install to hd, but little else!
Included are:
- fluxbox
- links2
- xterm
- gparted
- nano
- MidnightCommander
- sysvconfig
- antiX cheat codes (lean, mean, nogui, kbd selection) written by UnicornRider

Quick Tips
- Login as 'demo', password = 'demo'.
- For root access, password = 'root'. Please do not login as root. It is totally unnecessary.
- Use 'sux' rather than 'su' when opening GUI apps as root in a terminal.
- Sudo is not configured by default. antiX is not Ubuntu!
- To boot from floppy, I suggest SmartBootManager.
- antiX can also boot from an .iso file on a hard-drive. Boot from iso on hard-disk This is very fast.
- antiX can also be installed as a livecd to usb. Using a live-usb-cd is very fast.
- This site is under construction. For questions, comments, please use the antiX forum or the antiX forum on MepisLovers
- There is also a lot of information suitable for antiX in the MEPIS wiki.
