Welcome to antiX.

About antiX

antiX is a fast, lightweight and easy to install linux live CD distribution based on MEPIS for Intel-AMD x86 compatible systems. antiX offers users the "Magic of Mepis" in an environment suitable for old computers. So don't throw away that old computer yet! The goal of antiX is to provide a light, but fully functional and flexible free operating system for both newcomers and experienced users of Linux. It should run on most computers, ranging from 64MB old PII 266 systems with pre-configured 128MB RAM to the latest powerful boxes. 128MB RAM is recommended for antiX. The installer needs minimum 1.2GB hard disk size. antiX can also be used as a fast-booting rescue cd.

antiX-M7-M8 will not run (yet) on older processors such as Pentium I (it seems that PII is ok, but PII MMX may not boot), AMD K5, and AMD K6 as it uses an up to date i686 kernel. antiX-Spartacus should.

At the moment antiX comes as a full distro (c430MB) and as a base distro (c230MB). For those who wish to have control over the install, use antiX-base.

antiX-M8.2 'Tȟašúŋke Witkó' released

Full version (c466MB) and antiX-M8.2-base (c253MB) version available from mepisimo , ibiblio and the mirrors below

On behalf of the antiX-team I am proud to announce that antiX MEPIS 8.2 'Tȟašúŋke Witkó' - a fast, light, flexible and complete desktop and livecd based on SimplyMEPIS and Debian Testing is now available in full and base versions. This release defaults to a fully customised icewm desktop (fluxbox is also installed) using a SimplyMEPIS 2.6.27-25 kernel and tweaked MEPIS Assistants for better compatibility in antiX. 10 languages are fully supported out of the box with the language chosen at live CD boot carrying over to install. Boot time should be faster, particularly if the 'Faster' option is chosen at livecd boot menu and RAM usage low. antiX-Control Centre has been further improved, new scripts for screenshots, phonebook, mouse configuration have been added. As well as including the usual applications such as iceweasel(3.0.11) available in 11 languages, pidgin(2.5.8), abiword(2.6.8), gnumeric(1.9.9), rox-filer(2.9) and claws-mail(3.5), antiX-M8.2 also includes a meta-installer, an updated ceni and wicd(1.6.1) for wired/wireless connections, UMTSmon - a simple connect program for users using 3g usb modems, antiX-M8.2 uses X.org 7.4, auto-login with latest SLiM, smxi, inxi, svmi scripts from h2, and Dillo 2.1-1. New apps include: gecko-mediaplayer, gnome-mplayer, alpine, alsaplayer, cheese, antix2usb script and many more.

antiX is designed to work on computers with as little as 64 MB RAM and Pentium II or equivalent AMD processors, but not K5/K6 processors. 128 MB RAM is the recommended minimum.

Full Release notes for 'Tȟašúŋke Witkó' (antiX-M8.2)

This release has seen improvements in several areas: localisation, Debian compatibilty and user flexibility.

1. Localisation. Building on from antiX-M8 "Intifada", antiX fully supports 10 languages out of the box without any need for tweaking default desktop. iceweasel browser is configured for 11 languages. Many languages are supported partially by adding a cheatcode at grub/boot/menu.

2. Debian compatibility. antiX is not 100% Debian, but very close. With a few tweaks, it can be made 100% Debian for those that want it to be.

3. Flexibility antiX is incredibly flexible. Use it how you want from ultra-stable to bleeding edge. Options to install kde4, xfce, gnome desktop environments, run as a server or 'mean and lean' as default. You the user decides.

Main upgrades from 'Intifada' (antiX-M8)

  • All MEPIS tools updated and adapted for antiX
  • MEPIS 2.6.27-25 kernel

4. You can safely use sidux, liquorix and Debian kernels in antiX (if you wish). Use smxi for this, but before you do it is a good idea to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst See here: http://antix.freeforums.org/how-to-set-up-boot-grub-menu-lst-for-automatic-updates-t1244.html?hilit=grub

5. You can use the autologin feature of SLiM. Control Centre->Configure slim and edit slim.conf file to read something like this; auto_login yes default_user (your username)

6. Live antiX on usb. As root antix2usb -h

7. Faster boot once installed. Set up insserv. As root dpkg-reconfigure insserv. For a fast kernel, install the latest liquorix kernel.

antiX-M8 'Intifada!' released

Full version (c435MB) and antiX-M8-base (c235MB) version available from mepisimo , Tuxfamily MEPIS mirror and ibiblio and the mirrors below

On behalf of the antiX-team I am proud to announce that antiX MEPIS 8 'Intifada' - a fast and light complete desktop and livecd based on SimplyMEPIS and Debian Testing, with a little bit of sidux,- is now available in full and base editions. This release defaults to a fully customised icewm desktop (fluxbox is also installed) In addition to the SimplyMEPIS 8.0 foundation with its 2.6.27-15 kernel and Assistants, antiX has an improved antiX-Control Centre, new scripts for screenshots, and phonebook. There are improved and extended themes and artwork for icewm and fluxbox. Localisation is much improved in this version. As well as including usual applications such as iceweasel(3.0.6), pigin(2.4), abiword(2.6.4), gnumeric(1.8-3), rox-filer(2.8) and claws-mail(3.5), antiX-M8 also includes the sidux meta-installer, an updated ceni and wicd for wired/wireless connections, UMTSmon - a simple connect program for users using 3g usb modems, firehol firewall, gnomebaker replaces brasero, urxvt replaces wterm. antiX-M8 has X.org 7.3, auto-login with latest SLiM, smxi, inxi, svmi scripts from h2, and Dillo 2. New apps include: zim (wiki), Gjots (notes), Grsync, parted and luckyBackup.

AntiX is designed to work on computers with as little as 64 MB RAM and Pentium II or equivalent AMD processors, but not K5/K6 processors. 128 MB RAM is recommended minimum.

Full Release notes for 'Intifada!' (antiX-M8)

This release concentrates on 5 main areas.

1. Customised icewm. 2. antiX Control Centre. 3. sidux meta-installer. 4. smxi script integration. 5. Improved localisation/languages

1. Fully customised icewm - default 'desktop' Thanks to the great work by OU812 and impuwatt, antiX-M8 now comes with icewm as default desktop. New antiX themes are included, menu re-organised to make icewm in antiX-M8 work as a fully functioning and stylish desktop, with tools to customise as the user wishes.

2. antiX Control Centre. In antiX-M8 the Control Centre in antiX-M7.5 has been extended. Users can now carry out desktop, peripherals, system, network and hardware related tasks from one central control centre. New additions to the Control centre include: Change cursor theme Backup and restore Grsync Manage firewall Image a partition Hardware information

3. sidux meta-installer. antiX-M8 includes the sidux meta-package installer. This enables users to install 'groups' of packages with a single click. Meta-packages include: Disk Education Games Language LaTeX Multimedia Network Non_free Office Older Computer Server Windowmanager and Desktop Environments

4. smxi script integration. Thanks to h2, the smxi script can be used in antiX. This script enables users to keep their antiX rolling along and fully maintained. This has allowed antiX to be incredibly flexible (even more so the antiX-base version) If users wish they can 'sidux' or 'sid' their system, install newer kernels from Debian and sidux, install graphics drivers (ATI and nVidia), install other desktop environments such as xfce, kde and install virtualbox and lots more! Also included is the inxi script. This script can be used in irc to show useful information about hardware and system.

5. Improved localisation/languages antiX-M8 is approximately 40MB bigger than previous versions due to the improvement in localisation. With a little bit of tweaking, you should be able to set the 'desktop' (icewm and fluxbox) to the language of your choice. antiX uses the MEPIS installer which at the time of release is available in English, German, Spanish, French and Portuguese-Brazil. The installer asks you to set your keyboard and locales. This sets the locale as root user in antiX and so you need to follow these extra steps.

i) As root in a terminal dpkg-reconfigure locales (choose all/default unless you need extras and then the locale of your dektop eg es_ES.UTF-8 for Spanish)

ii) Add this line below the export line in /etc/profile export LANG=es_ES.UTF-8 (obviously use the one you chose in i) above)

iii) Logout/login to your windows manager of choice. For icewm, open a terminal as user and type update-menus For fluxbox, open a terminal as root and type update-menus

Note: You must do iii) in the windows manager otherwise the change doesn't show.

iv) You should now be able to use apps in your chosen language.

v) You can change the keyboard to your language via control centre. This is only for the session. To make it permanent you need to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

vi) You can also edit fluxbox menu and icewm menu/toolbar to have antiX control centre and exit options in another language. At the moment available in German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Romanian, Catalan, Greek. Simply put the correct ending on the antixcc.sh and exitantix.sh eg for Spanish antixcc-es.sh and exitantix-es.sh

Some advice:

1. If you have a separate home partition, then you will probably get error message at boot about icewm and fluxbox not finding folders. To fix: Move /usr/share/fluxbox/menu-install to ~/.fluxbox and rename menu and Move /usr/share/icewm/menu-install to ~/.icewm and rename menu or simply delete both menu-install files.

2. Toggling from icewm to fluxbox or vice-versa via the menu is not advised. It is better to logout and login to the other windows manager (Press F1 at login screen)

3. You may wish to copy or symlink contents of /usr/share/wallpaper into ~/.Wallpaper

4. As antiX is a 'rolling release' distro it is advisable to run regular dist-upgrades. Using apt-get or aptitude (but keep to one) from the command line is recommended, as is using the smxi script. Synaptic is best used for installing/upgrading individual packages.

5. You can safely use sidux and Debian kernels in antiX (if you wish). Use smxi for this, but before you do it is a good idea to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst See here: http://antix.freeforums.org/how-to-set-up-boot-grub-menu-lst-for-automatic-updates-t1244.html?hilit=grub

6. You can use the autologin feature of SLiM. Control Centre->Configure slim and edit slim.conf file to read something like this; auto_login yes default_user (your username)

wallpaper for each window manager. (http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Environment/Tools/Nitrogen-27450.shtml)

not forgetting, of course,

  • Warren at MEPIS
  • the sidux team especially for meta-installer, wpagui, wpasupplicant, ceni and UMTSmon.(http://sidux.com/index.html)

Intifada!

For users that have antiX-M7-5 already installed, you can upgrade to antiX-M8 by using the antiX-upgrader2 script:

http://www.mepisimo.com/antix/antiX-upgrader7.5-8.0

Download to your home/user folder, make executable and run as root in a terminal ./antiX-upgrader2.sh

Please read the script carefully. It is pretty basic, but it gets the job done. Fully upgrading from antiX-M7.5 will install approx. 230MB of upgrades. If you chose to install the latest kernel, then you will need to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Have fun!

Quick Tips

  • Login as 'demo', password = 'demo'.
  • For root access, password = 'root'. Please do not login as root. It is totally unnecessary.
  • Use 'sux' rather than 'su' when opening GUI apps as root in a terminal.
  • Sudo is not configured by default. antiX is not Ubuntu!
  • To boot from floppy, I suggest SmartBootManager.
  • antiX can also boot from an .iso file on a hard-drive. Boot from iso on hard-disk This is very fast.
  • antiX can also be installed as a livecd to usb. Using a live-usb-cd is very fast.
  • This site is under construction. For questions, comments, please use the antiX forum or the antiX forum on MepisLovers
  • There is also a lot of information suitable for antiX in the MEPIS wiki.
