Welcome to antiX.

About antiX

antiX is a fast, lightweight and easy to install systemd-free linux live CD distribution based on Debian Stable for Intel-AMD x86 compatible systems. antiX offers users the "antiX Magic" in an environment suitable for old and new computers. So don't throw away that old computer yet! The goal of antiX is to provide a light, but fully functional and flexible free operating system for both newcomers and experienced users of Linux. It should run on most computers, ranging from 256MB old PIII systems with pre-configured swap to the latest powerful boxes. 256MB RAM is recommended minimum for antiX. The installer needs minimum 2.7GB hard disk size. antiX can also be used as a fast-booting rescue cd. Special XFCE editions made in collaboration with the MEPIS Community called MX-15 "Fusion" (released 24 December 2015) and MX-14 "Symbiosis" (released March 24, 2014) are also available. antiX MX series has a separate development schedule to antiX.

At the moment antiX-16.2 "Berta Cáceres" comes as a full distro (c695MB), a base distro (c510MB) and a core-libre distro (c190MB) for 32 bit and 64 bit computers. For those who wish to have total control over the install, use antiX-core and build up.

Present released antiX-16.2 versions, 16 June 2017: isos and md5sum files available 'Berta Cáceres'

antiX-17.rc1 full versions available for public testing

We are almost there!

32 and 64 bit iso files of the 'full' version are available for further testing.

  • NOTE!
  • wicd wireless option in F4 of live boot menu. Wicd is tuned OFF by default.

As well as checking that all works as expected on an installed system, we would also like feedback on the following, in particular.

Live-usb testing for antiX-17-rc1

   Console Fonts
   -------------
Console fonts (should never be less than 80 characters across)
If kernel VGA menu appears are you asked if you want to save?
Is the proper vga resolution always saved with "F8 Save"?
   Mount and Automount
   -------------------
Mount all partitions or usb partitions at boot-time with cheats:
"mount=<off|usb|all>" This should be sticky on live-usb.
   Alternative (non-X) automount with "fstab=<auto|hotplug|test>"
       auto    = auto mount partitions
test = control automounting with the cheats:
                 "automount" and "noautomount".
hotplug = add fstab entries and /media directories but
                 don't automatically mount
   Frugal and Save
   ---------------
Does frugal + persistence + save + toram, etc all still work?
Does "F8 Save" work on frugal install?
Does "Save these options" work with uefi boot? On frugal?
   Xorg configuration
   ------------------
Experimental: "xorg=x" cheat uses xorg.conf created by
"X -configure". This causes X to not start in Virtual Box.
Does it work on your real hardware?
   Splash-Select
   -------------
In the console, splash-select let's you select a different
background image. There is now an edit feature that lets you
easily edit the theme file for your current splash theme.
Normally you would edit the values for: tx=, ty=, tw=, and
th= to change the text area. These variables correspond
to: the left margin, the top margin, the width of the
text area, and the height of the text area.
   Networking
   ----------
Are there any lingering problems with networking?
Does the network "hotplug" if the ethernet cable is unplugged
and plugged back in? There is a delay before the interface
   is brought down. Use "ifconfig"
Does the wifi interface "hotplug" if you are able to turn
your wifi hardware on and off (some laptops let you do this).
   Live shutdown
   -------------
If you notice delays at live shutdown, you can start using
either "pause" or "db+" to pause at the end of shutdown so
you can note down error messages.

Known issues:

  • Documentation is out of date.

antiX-17-b3-full, base, net and core-libre versions available for public testing

  • Beta3 has some bug fixes and a new kernel for 64 bit isos.
  • Still systemd and libsystemd free
  • eudev rather than udev

I have uploaded the base, net and core-libre versions for people to test. The base version includes IceWM and fits on a cd. No libreoffice though.

Known issues since a fix has still not been found.

  • IceWM and jwm task bar icon for streamlight is half size
  • IceWM themes do not increase size of icons
  • Conky blur when switching themes in IceWM

Enjoy!

29 July 2017

antiX-17-b2-full available for public testing

One month on from the release of beta1, we are ready to test out beta2.

Hopefully we managed to fix some of the problems identified in beta 1 such as automatic connection to ethernet on live device and installed to hard drive.

Decided to use conky-legacy and gufw-legacy versions (1. to save some space and 2. to save some RAM usage 3. They both seem more stable).

Installer now prompts for keyboard set up at the beginning rather than near the end. This *should* work much better for those who want/need multi-language support.

eudev seems to be working ok so we will ship with it rather than udev. (note it is packaged as udev to avoid dependency hell, but I assure you we are using eudev).

Still known issues since I have not found a fix.

  • IceWM and jwm task bar icon for streamlight is half size
  • IceWM themes do not increase size of icons
  • Conky blur when switching themes in IceWM

The issue with IceWM is not because it is a later version built from git since the version in Debian stretch also has the issues mentioned above. My guess is its a (gtk3) theme issue.

Enjoy!

23 April 2017

antiX-stretch a3 available

Hopefully most of the bugs found in a2 have been fixed.

This version ships with:

  • 4.10.5 kernel
  • virtualbox guest modules (which seem to be broken).
  • qt5ct for setting qt themes (problematic)
  • User manager (needs testing, parts are almost certainly broken).
  • apt sources includes onion.list for use with tor (not included)
  • advert block hosts file updated
  • apt-transport-https included
  • new default wallpaper and login background
  • icewm themes extended
  • no qt4 apps wpasupplicant inbuilt to use qt5
  • env-info (neofetch for old hardware!)
  • wicd enabled but not added to taskbar since it adds c20MB RAM
  • live-usb-maker has encryption option (work in progress and only for the cli version at the moment)

Known issues:

  • Live boot in Virtualbox seems to break the consoles so on boot you do not see the final set of text, and on reboot/halt, you do not see the eject cd message. Just wait 5 secs or so and press Enter.

You may ask why include it if it is broken. To see if it is indeed broken for all and to see if someone out there knows why and has a fix.

  • Qt5 theming seems to be pretty random/broken (upstream).
  • IceWM theme switching /conky readout blurred as on a2. Can't find a fix for this. Just turn off conky in the menu and turn it back on again to remove the blur.

New antiX repositories

antiX is now using these repositories. The existing/old ones will still work, but the new ones will be the default for antiX-17 stretch.

#Use with Debian Stable/stretch repositories. Set as default for antiX-17. Note new repos
 deb http://repo.antixlinux.com/stretch stretch main nosystemd
 #Use with Debian Testing repositories.
 #deb http://repo.antixlinux.com/testing testing main nosystemd
 #Use with Debian Sid repositories.
 #deb http://repo.antixlinux.com/sid sid main nosystemd

Hopefully, at some point, the mirrors will pick up the new stretch one.

antiX-17-a2 32 bit only for testing

  • First public alpha build of Debian stretch based antiX-17-full (32 bit for now).
  • You will notice it no longer fits on a cd.
  • Default cheats disable wicd and user will need to use ceni to connect to net (wlan and/or ethernet).
  • Some debranded MX are included.
  • Luckybackup is locally built by me with qt5 and needs testing.

Security kernel upgrades

All users of antiX-16 jessie series will/should upgrade their kernels, hopefully it will be automatic with an apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade The fixed versions are the 4.4.10 and 4.6.2 versions for 32 and 64 bit, and their gnu equivalents.

The patches fix this security issue:

https://thehackernews.com/2017/02/linux-kernel-local-root.html

URGENT

It was brought to my attention by antiX user Rademes that the Dirty COW vulnerability was still present on 64 bit antiX-16 (not 64 bit antiX-16.1 nor 32 bit antiX-16)) after a dist-upgrade.

For some reason the correct linux-image deb was updated, but does not auto-upgrade even though the headers do.

All 64bit antiX-16 users (full, base and core) should do the following.

 apt-get update
 apt-get dist-upgrade
 apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers-4.4.10-antix.1-amd64-smp linux-image-4.4.10-antix.1-amd64-smp

27 June 2016

antiX-16 (Berta Cáceres) released

Debian 8.5 (jessie), but systemd-free! And it fits on a cd! Great LiveUSB features!

We initially set out to add a few enhancements on top of antiX-15 in preparation for a stretch release, but we got carried away and added lots of features particularly when running live.

As usual antiX comes in 3 flavours for both 32 and 64 bit processors.

antiX-full (c695MB) -4 windows managers - IceWM(default), fluxbox, jwm and herbstluftwm

antiX-base (c510MB) -3 windows managers - fluxbox(default), jwm and herbstluftwm

antiX-core-libre (c190MB) - no X. Just enough to get you connected (wired) and ready to build. Uses a libre kernel.

antiX has been designed to be fast, light on resources and flexible.

Install it to harddrive, run it live from a stick or run as a frugal install on a partition.

Want to run antiX on a usb device with persistence? antiX does this simply and effectively.

Want to remaster your running live system? antiX makes this easy.

Want to create an iso file of your installed to hard drive system? Yes, antiX has this feature too.

Want to run live on a box with UEFI bootloader? antiX can do this.

Want to run bleeding edge Debian Testing (stretch) or sid? Offered at installation. Be aware that this option is a 'moving target' and is NOT recommended for inexperienced users.

The choice is yours!

So what is included?

Lots! Explore!

  • Based on Debian Jessie, but without systemd nor systemd-shim.
  • Customised 4.4.10 LTS kernel with fbcondecor splash
  • libreoffice 4.3.3-2
  • firefox-esr 45.2.0
  • claws-mail 3.13.0
  • xmms -for audio
  • gnome-mplayer - for playing video
  • smtube 16.3.0 - play youtube videos without a using a browser
  • streamlight-antix - stream videos with very low RAM usage.

Great LiveUSB features:

o fast boot times without systemd (X in under 10 seconds on new boxes running live) o auto-customizable bootloaders (legacy and uefi) o easy persistence and easy frugal installs o remasters and respins o legacy and 32-bit uefi and 64-bit uefi

In more detail:

We make use of the LiveUSB to save information even if home or root persistence are not enabled. The goal is to make the LiveUSB more convenient without sacrificing user control. Such saved information includes:

   1) LiveUSB-Storage Feature
   2) SaveState Feature
   3) BIOS Bootloader "F8 Save" --> save
   4) UEFI Bootloader "Customize (with text menus)"
   5) Sticky boot options

  • LiveUSB-Storage Feature

LiveUSB-Storage directories are created for the root user and the demo users. This gives you easy, direct access to store files on the LiveUSB without having to enable persistence. The only size limitation is the size of the LiveUSB partition You can disable this with the "nostore" cheat.

  • SaveState Feature

The savestate feature saves a few files across reboots. For example files for wicd are saved so the system will remember your wireless networks and passwords. You control which files get saved by editing the list in /live/antiX/state/general-state-files and /live/antiX/state/machine-state-files. The general files are saved and restored across machines while the machine files are saved and restored for each machine so each machine can have its own copy.

  • Sticky LiveUSB boot options

In addition, several options automatically become "sticky" (remembered across reboots) even if persistence is not enabled. There are:

automount Automatically mount partitions when plugged-in***
mount=usb Mount all USB partitions at boot-time***
mount=all Mount ALL partitions at boot-time***
desktop=xxxxx Saves the last desktop you selected***
   savestate Enables saving state files
   nosavestate Disable saving state files
   nostore Disable the LiveUSB-Storage feature
   dostore Enable the LiveUSB-Storage feature

For example, if you don't want the LiveUSB-Storage feature enabled then you just need to select "nostore" once from the "F4 Options" menu. The feature will stay disabled until you use the "dostore" boot option.

  • F4 Options --> automount should work now

File systems that use FUSE (ntfs-3g and exfat) will still need to be mounted manually. Even FUSE file systems will get mounted at boot-time with "mount=usb" and "mount=all" boot options.

  • The Live UEFI bootloader has been improved

There is now a Save option when you select "Customize boot (text menus)". It works like the F8 Save menu in the BIOS bootloader. If a Windows UEFI bootloader is detected in the first partition of the first hard drive then we offer an option to chain load to windows. Various console resolutions are available in the bootloader menu. You can also adjust the resolution manually when you edit an entry.

  • The nosysv=xxx option has been renamed to disable=xxx

(although "nosysv" should still work). The services that are disabled are no longer printed to the screen, instead they are listed in the file /etc/live/config/disabled.

  • The live boot is less chatty with fewer bogus errors and warnings

You can make the startup even more terse by using the "verb=4" cheat. This may not be fully compatible with some of the advanced LiveUSB options.

  • The default retry time has increased from 10 to 15 seconds

This is how long we look for the linuxfs file before giving up. If you use the "failsafe" option then it is set to 30 seconds. The default retry time for finding a frugal or persistence partition is still 10 seconds. You can adjust all of these times with "try=xx".

If you want Debian without systemd, give antiX a try. It works great on old boxes and the latest and greatest.

Enjoy!

NB: antiX MX (Xfce) series follows a different release schedule and is not included in this release.

  • If you want to try eudev, add dev to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list as shown below and then do apt-get dist-upgrade

deb http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/mx/antix/jessie jessie main nosystemd dev

  • The present installer does not allow for capital letters in the username. If you wish to have an installer that does this, use the one in the dev repo (see above). This installer should work ok, but it has not been extensively tested.

Known issues:

  • Streamtuner2

Users should delete the streamtuber2 folder in ~/.config and upgrade to the latest in the repository. Some stations crash on first use eg shoutcast, but work just fine afterwards.
